As a result of all my meanderings in paint, I eventually arrived at a visual mind-space that I consider to be lyrical painting, characterized by or expressing spontaneous, direct feeling. The abstract drawing subtly inhabiting the color fields was becoming more integral to the composition. This balance is my current challenge. This, and capturing an element of mystery as a piece subtly approaches image without becoming anything at all so that the viewer in striving for conceptual meaning is gently turned back to the pure aesthetic experience.
The section entitled harmonic abstraction builds on the poetic quality of lyrical abstraction. There is a focus on the color harmonies and compatible structural elements that knit the painting together in a harmonic unity. When I improvise on a piano jazz piece I experience the rhythmic vibrations as pleasing sequences of sound. The resulting patterns are exact metaphors for the subtle, overlapping colors and shapes of abstract painting. Like good music pleases the ear, the harmonies of pure abstract construction please the eye without needing to interpret the cognitive meaning of the piece.
